Single-ply means one layer of membrane, either TPO, PVC or EPDM, over insulation. It is light and quick to install, which suits Bellevue's commercial buildings and the short dry season. Which membrane fits depends on the roof's use, its drainage and what is already up there.
Single-ply roof membranes refer to the wide range of products used to cover the rooftop of a structure in one layer. These single-ply systems can be divided into two basic groups – thermosets and thermoplastics. Thermoset membranes are made from synthetic rubber polymers like EPDM and Neoprene. Thermoplastics, like TPO and PVC, are plastic-based and are easily heat-formed to a roof’s particular design. Once they cool, they harden again in their new shape. This makes the seams of thermoplastic single-ply roofing extremely strong.
Both of these roofing membranes are excellent for large roof installations because they’re manufactured in large sizes minimizing the seams needed for a single roof. They also include, whether white or black in color, additives like carbon black or titanium dioxide to increase their UV resistance and reflective properties.
